Calgary Rug Cleaning Basics

Area rugs are a lot of things, but can be summed up in three words: beautiful, useful, and expensive. Properly cleaning them will be the key to extending their life to get the most out of their beauty, use, and cost. Here are some tips from the Calgary rug cleaning pros here at Chinook Chem-Dry.

Like most things, the first step is forming a habit. Humans are creatures of habit by nature so adding in a rug cleaning habit will be huge. You probably don’t need to clean them every day, but try to create weekly, monthly, and yearly rug cleaning routines. This will help you get to know the ins and outs of your rug to help avoid damage. Clean them by doing the following tasks that will apply to virtually any type of rug.

  • Go over them with a vacuum. Be sure that you set the pile height to the right level to properly remove dirt and other particles. You should also avoid vacuuming fringe on the edges, and be extra cautious with shag rugs.
  • Use a brush to remove pet hair. Hair tends to wrap around the fibers and fabrics of a rug so vacuums can struggle to get it out. Use a stiff brush to remove the pet hair about once each week.
  • Rotate rugs a few times every year. Rugs can be damaged by frequent the frequent foot traffic their bound to see. Turn your rugs multiple times each year so they wear evenly.
  • Shake them out frequently. Doing so can remove a lot of the dirt and particles trapped deep with the rug. Shake them outdoors if possible.

Tip #2 – Deep Clean Your Rugs

A simple pass with a vacuum is helpful, but it won’t catch all the dust and grime that’s lurking in the deeper fibers of your rug. The problem is that each rug is unique and needs to be treated differently. Some rugs can be run through a washer while others will tatter and discolor when too much water or a bad shampoo is used. Check the label to see if there are certain shampoos or methods that will damage the rug. It’s possible that your rugs are dry clean only so watch out for that too. If your rugs are small and machine washable, place them in a mesh bag then wash them on a delicate setting and hang to dry.

Tip #3 – Remove Stains the Right Way

When it comes to rug stain removal, the sooner you can start the better! Start blotting out as much as you can, as soon as you can. Rubbing and scrubbing might set the stain in even deeper.

Here’s a simple DIY rug cleaning solution you try. Mix 1 teaspoon dishwashing detergent and ¼ teaspoon white vinegar in 1 quart of warm water. You can also go with a store-bought stain removing spray. Test a small part of the rug first to see if the solution causes any discoloration.
